Louis-Marius Marcadier (1874-1954) French Watercolor Chateau Beaune Burgundy

Description: Louis-Marius Marcadier (1874-1954), Antique or Vintage French Watercolor, Chateau de Chorey les Beaune, Burgundy, Signed As marked on the left, “Chateau de Chorey”, this lovely antique or vintage French watercolor depicts the chateau of Chorey-les-Beaune, a medieval castle, parts of which date from the 12th century, and which was remodeled in the 19th century. The château, registered on the list of French state Monuments Historiques, is located in Chorey-les-Beaune, between Beaune and Aloxe-Corton, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune wine region of Burgundy. It is signed “L. Marcadier”. Louis Marcadier (1874-1954), born in Montpellier, was a French painter, watercolorist, engraver and architect. Between 1890 and 1898 he studied painting, architecture and engraving at the Ecole Régionale des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier, where he was awarded several prizes, and later at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he attended as a winner of a Montpellier city scholarship. At the Beaux-Arts, he was the student of Victor Laloux and Jules Chaplain. Beginning in 1898 he showed regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he was member, and at the Salon des Indépendants. In 1911 he exhibited at the Pavillon du Jardin Anglais in Beaune. As a member of the Société des Artistes graveurs au burin, he participated in the 1914 International Exhibition of the Book industry and the Graphics Arts in Leipzig, Germany. Between 1923 and 1932 he exhibited at the Société des Amis des Arts in Dijon and in Versailles. In 1930, the Galerie Georges-Petit in Paris organized an exhibition of his watercolors. He lived in Paris on the avenue Perrichont and in Versailles in the rue de Satory during the period 1900 until the end of the 1930’s. In 1907 he married Catherine-Amélie Sandier in Beaune, daughter of Alexandre Sandier (Beaune 1843-Chorey-les-Beaune 1916), interior architect and ceramicist and director of the famous porcelain factory, the Manufacture de Sèvres. The couple frequently visited the Sandier family home in the village of Chorey-les-Beaune, just next to the chateau, and moved there permanently at the end of the 1930’s. Louis-Marius Marcadier died in Chorey in 1954. Consequently, this watercolor can be dated to sometime between 1907 and 1954.Several works of Louis-Marius Marcadier were acquired by the French state. The Musée du Louvre and the Petit-Palais in Paris have some of his engravings in their collections. He is listed in the Bénézit Dictionary of Artists, the renowned and very extensive publication of biographical information on visual artists in all fields.
