Description: [TRAVEL - EXPLORATIONS - 19th C. REVIEW]Under the direction ofEdward CHARTON1807-1890Édouard Charton Journalist, politician, lawyer, historian Édouard Charton, born in Sens on May 11, 1807 and died in Versailles on February 27, 1890, is a journalist, director of publications, and French politician. BiographyReceived as a lawyer, Édouard Thomas Charton registered with the Paris bar in 1827, but did not practice the profession for which he seems to have had a real aversion and continues to collaborate, as in the time of his studies to the bulletins of two societies, the Society for Elementary Education and the Society of Christian Morals. It was within these philanthropic societies that he understood the importance of education, discover the problems of society and acquires convictions that he will keep throughout his life. In 1829, he joins the ranks of the Saint-Simonians and, after a stint in the editorial office of the newspaper Globe, became, in 1830, the Journal of the doctrine of Saint-Simon, under the direction of Michel Chevalier, he traveled throughout Brittany and Vendée to preach Saint-Simonian ideas. During the schism of 1831 which saw the departure of the Republican Saint-Simonians, he broke, like his friends Hippolyte Carnot and Jean Reynaud, with Prosper Enfantin. It began in 1833 with the Quaint store, an illustrated weekly launched by the Saint-Simonian printer Lachevardière based on the model of Penny Magazine British, a fruitful career as publishing director. Tireless director of this first popular illustrated magazine until 1888, he succeeded in mobilizing, for the cause of education and “useful entertainment”, not only his Saint-Simonian friends but also renowned scholars and writers. For more than fifty years, the articles were not signed but we know, for example, that George Sand contributed to them or that Camille Flammarion made his debut as a popularizer in 1864, at the age of 22.Convinced that the'illustration is essential for understanding and enjoyment, it is at the origin of the revival of wood engraving in France and promoted the early careers of several renowned illustrators. Édouard Charton was at the origin in 1843 with Joanne, Paulin and Dubochet of the launch of the Illustration, another successful weekly, from which he quickly left the management. When Louis Philippe fell in February 1848, he was called to the general secretariat of the Ministry of Public Education by his friend Hippolyte Carnot, minister of the provisional government. Deputy for Yonne then Councilor of State, he protested against the coup d'état of December 2, 1851 before resigning of its functions. His attitude on the occasion of these events is reported by Victor Hugo in Story of a crime. Under the Second Empire, Charton ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for the democratic opposition in his hometown in 1857 and 1863.After having published, from 1853 to 1855, the four volumes of theHistory of ancient and modern travelers, he published in 1859, with Henri Bordier, a History of France illustrated, praised in glowing terms for the choice of its illustrations in the bulletin of the library of the École des chartes. Interested in the stories of contemporary travelers, he launched, in 1860, the magazine Around the world which marks his debut at Hachette. This successful magazine was followed by the launch in 1864 of the Library of Wonders, collection of small popular works. Here too, Charton knows how to convince to ensure the competition of the best specialists.Installed in Versailles in 1863, he founded a popular library there in 1864. He became a corresponding member of the Institut de France in 1867.The fall of the Empire marks his return to politics. On September 6, 1870, he was appointed prefect of Seine-et-Oise by the government of national defense. Elected Republican from Yonne in February 1871, he sat in the National Assembly. From 1876, he continuously represented his original department in the Senate until his death in 1890.His interventions in the assemblies are all marked by concern for promotion of the people through education and instruction. He underlines the importance of artistic education and defends the idea of a cultural policy. He participated in the creation of the Trocadéro ethnography museum, ancestor of the Musée de l'Homme. He was elected in 1876 to the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences in the vacant place by the death of Auguste Casimir-Perier.Around the worldAround the World, a new travel journal is a French weekly published from January 1860.
