As the successor to the older O405/O405N series, the Citaro is highly popular around the world, with over 45,000 units built from 1997 to 2015. These buses are manufactured in Germany and shipped completely built-up (CBU) to Singapore. SMRT Buses first introduced the Citaro to Singapore in 2010, with a single demonstrator unit paving the way for a small batch of 50 buses which entered service the following year. SBS Transit procured Citaro buses in far larger quantities, ordering over 1000 buses delivered between 2011-2016, and later further increased by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). In 2016, under the Bus Contracting Model (BCM), the LTA leased Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses (built to SBS Transit specifications) to Tower Transit, Go-Ahead Singapore as well as SMRT Buses. All Citaro buses in Singapore are of the facelifted 1st-generation 12-metre urban model with two doors. The vast majority are built to similar interior and exterior specifications.
