Description: "Moscow" is the first in a trilogy of books by German writer Theodore Plivier in which he follows a group of German soldiers fighting in the Russian Campaign in WWII. Plivier is sadly a forgotten figure today, but he was singularly well placed to write an informed, yet sympathetic account. A staunch opponent of Hitler, he fled Germany for Russia in the 1930s. After the war, he lived for a while in East German before fleeing once more to the west. His contemporary knowledge of both societies gave him his unique ability to capture both sides of this epic conflict in which huge sacrifices were made by soldiers and civilians. "Moscow" follows the fortunes of a large cast of characters, from foot soldiers to generals, bureaucrats and peasants. This can be confusing at times, but it provides the reader with a broad and informed perspective of all phases of the campaign, ending as the German army gets within sight of the Soviet capital.
