Silver King BUNKER HUNT. Cover: Photo by Mark Perlstein--Black Star. TOP OF THE WEEK: THE HUNT SILVER PANIC: It was one of the most dramatic days in the history of U.S. financial markets--a classic panic. Texas billionaire Nelson Bunker, Hunt had nearly cornered the silver market. But suddenly, the silver king toppled, raising fears of financial collapse. Chaotic markets finally calmed. But reverberations from the silver bust will resound for weeks to come. THE SHAH IN EGYPT: His face pallid, his frame gaunt, the exiled Shah of Iran flew to Egypt, leaving a trail of political intrigue and diplomatic debris. The Shah's flight was one more setback for the effort to free the American hostages in Teheran, and Jimmy Carter recycled some U.S. options that blended toughness with conciliation. In Cairo, surgeons removed the Shah's enlarged spleen--and his days of wandering appeared to be over. A MESSAGE TO CARTER: After seventeen defeats, Teddy Kennedy finally had something to celebrate: a stunning sweep of the New York and Connecticut primaries. But the returns were less a triumph for his uphill candidacy than a vote of shaken confidence in Jimmy Carter. SOLAR SYSTEMS: The energy crisis is changing the rules of American architecture and may soon change its looks. Solar heating, either the "active" form that uses roof collecting panels or the "passive" form that lets the sunshine in, is being installed in buildings private and public. Douglas Davis (left, with architect Daniel Scully) reports the trend. DANCING TO WORDS: Can theater and ballet mix? Dancer-choreographer Twyla Tharp makes a fascinating stab at this odd coupling: she is appearing on Broadway in an unusual collaboration with playwright Thomas Babe and composer John Simon. Tharp (right) and her company dance Babe's story of a woman striving to break the bonds of family responsibility. INDEX of ARTICLES in this issue: NATIONAL AFFAIRS: Carter is in trouble again Joan Kennedy, born-again politician. A third party for Anderson? Reagan's secret of success. Fritz Mondale, Presidential point man. Hard times in Michigan Three Mile Island's legacy. A Washington volcano blows its top. INTERNATIONAL: Iran: the Shah's flight to Egypt George Ball on Iran. Israel: a shocker before the summit. The murder of an archbishop Death in the North Sea. A plea from Soviet women. BUSINESS: Nelson Bunker Hunt's silver panic (the cover).. The Hunts--they're different The credit crunch (cont'd) .. The budget: pain and gimmicks A clinic on corporate bribery.. MOVIES: Was Errol Flynn a Nazi spy? "Serial": satire into sitcom.
