Description: The Ohio 68th Infantry saw action in many battles, including Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, the Atlanta Campaign, Kennesaw Mountain and many others. ALBERT FULLER enlisted on October 31, 1861 as a Private. He was mustered into C Co. Ohio 68th Infantry on December 13, 1861 and was mustered out on July 10, 1865, at Louisville, KY. 4 pp, ALS, 5 x 8, letter by Fuller to his sister, written from Potalligo, SC, dated January 20 & 21, 1865, on U.S. Sanitary letterhead. Camp 68 Regt. O V V I “January the 20th 1865 “Potalligo, SC “Dear Sister, “As I am alone in my pump tent tonight and no one to bother me I will try and scratch you a few lines to see if I can hear from that part of the country again. “I am well at present and also the rest of the Charloe boys in Co. C, the regt. is over to the first Division camp to hold their works in case the rebs would make a dash in on them to day while the first Division was out on reconnaissance. But I can hear them a hollering. I think they are coming in, if so our boys will soon be here. “They have had a hard time of it today for it has rained all the time that they have been gone. I was out with the reg this forenoon but as good luck would have it I was detailed to come to camp to draw rations and so I stade. “The rebs is pretty fresh around here or they come up insight of our pickets but not a nuff to do much harm. We was out on the 16 our brigade and captured 40 head of cattle and 15 head of sheep and I got about a bushel of sweet potatoes. We only went out about 3 miles and we hadn’t hardly got out of sight of camp when the jonies [Johnnies] fired at our advance but they don’t amount to much. We took eight prisoners. “Wal Lona as the boys has come in I will bring this scribbling to a close but tonight. I will try and finish tomorrow so good night to all. A. Fuller “Jan the 21st 1865 “Wal Lona as morning has come I will try and finish. This is a rather dirty piece of paper to look at in daytime but it is some of old miss Sanitary and so I will send it. We have got around pretty well around towards the East and we draw tobacco and onions and potatoes and some canned fruit from the Sanitary Commission. “Well we heard some pretty good news this morning and part of it is true to but about the rest. Fort Fisher is taken with 2000 men one major General prisoners and also a large muster of heavy guns. This I believe is official. This fort is the key to Wilmington and the report is that Wilmington is taking to and also Augusta is taken by Kilpatrick Cavalry but it is a rumor. I don’t think it is so. “If all these places is taken I don’t see where they will coop themselves after a while. I think Sherman will make a move on Charleston before long and if he does it will lift general spirits... “Wal Lona, I have told of everything importance...” In pencil. Dark writing in general. Phonetic spelling. A couple of small fold tears repaired with archival tape. Nice letter from this important regiment. Everything we sell is guaranteed authentic forever to the original buyer.
