Description: These are a matching pair ( for those of you that like to double up your pillows) of late 18th or early 19th century ceramic opium den pillows at 10.75”x2.5”x4”. In the days before strongboxes hiding your valuables inside your pillow and sleeping on it was the most secure way to protect the items you treasured when you weren’t awake or under the influence of opium. In addition to the functionality of a strongbox it was not flammable and used next to an open flame opium lamp. These particular examples are covered with traditional Han Chinese characters. These are in great condition for their age with heavy crazing - please see photos.
