He had a difficult childhood, his father supposedly having attempted to kill him as an infant by leaving him out on a snowy balcony, something which encapsulated his entire relationship with his father. Bowles took an early interest in reading and poetry, writing stories by age 4 and having written his first published poem "Spire Song" by age 17. Bowles took an interest in music during his short tenure at the University of Virginia, but by 1929, Bowles had dropped out and sailed to Paris where he would make his first musical composition which premiered in New York in December of 1931. In Paris, Bowles met Aaron Copland, the pair becoming lovers for many years, Bowles taking his first trip to Tangiers with Copland in the summer of 1931. Tangiers would remain in Bowles' heart for his whole life, as he would come to live there for over 55 years of his life and into death. In 1947, upon receiving an advance from Doubleday to write a novel, Bowles would move to live permanently in Tangiers alongside his wife Jane Auer, herself an author and playwright. Bowles credits Auer with being his inspiration to begin writing fiction as an adult, crediting her 1943 novel "Two Serious Ladies" as the spark. "The Sheltering Sky" was named for a song Bowles heard throughout his childhood called "Down Among the Sheltering Palms". It was initially rejected by Doubleday who didn't consider it a novel, and instead had to be first published by a British house called John Lehmann Limited. Doubleday supposedly later attempted to walk back their rejection, but only after the novel began selling well. "The Sheltering Sky" was first published in America under New Directions Publishing in 1949. This edition of "The Sheltering Sky" comes with a first state dust jacket. "The Sheltering Sky" was a great financial and critical success. It would be placed on the "TIME Best 100 English-language Novels from 1923-2005, and received a film adaptation in 1990 in which Bowles made a cameo appearance. The film would win several awards for cinematography, Best Director, and it's original score. Seller ID: 1386766 Subject: Literature Welcome to the eBay store of Second Story Books!
