Measures approx: 23" High to top of long stave (handle), 9" in diameter, 14" from bottom to top rim. What is a Piggin Bucket you ask? In the colonial era (1650-1763), some buckets were made like a small barrel, but with one wood stave left extra long to serve as a handle. They were often made by tradesmen known as Coopers. Coopers made casks, buckets, barrels, and containers for flour, gunpowder, tobacco, shipping, wine, hard grains, milk, and other liquids to transport them from the Colonies to England. This RARE TREASURE is an Antique Primitive Piggin Coopered Bucket circa 1700's. This Piggin Bucket has an extra long carved stave that is extended on one side with a hole carved out that serves as a handle or for hanging. This handle is boldly engraved with an R.I. initialed on the back (perhaps Rhode Island). As noted, Piggin buckets date back to the Colonial era and even beyond and many were brought to this country by Scandinavian immigrants. These types of buckets were used as utilitarian farm tools for everything from feeding grain to farm animals to general use for household chores. This bucket is banded with two heavy iron bands that are roughly 1 inch in width varying slightly and the staves are fairly tight, but would not hold liquids as there is some flex and gaps between them. The hand forged bands are form fitted to the Bucket and have been shimmed and glued at some point (see pictures), most likely after bucket shrank with age. Some of the shims were a little looser than others so we applied some standard wood glue to protect them for shipment. The Piggin has a beautiful primitive patina with a nice mellowed aged wood and has age appropriate patina and wear (as noted in photos of handle and top rim). Please look over all pictures taken for your consideration and use zoom as needed. We pictured from all sides and angles we could. The band nails (or rivets) are forged and similar to older rose head type nails. They do not penetrate the wood.We ship with extreme care!
