Description: Authentic RARE Vintage / Antique Early 1900's Wooden Dynamite Explosive Detonator Switch Box Up for your consideration is a RARE Authentic Vintage / Antique Wooden Dynamite Explosive Detonator Switch Box dating back to the early 1900's. Item was acquired a few years ago at an estate auction of a long time farmer in Western WI. Relatives indicated that the item had been used around the farm to remove stumps, large rocks, etc. and was thought to have been originally used by a mining company. Upon researching this item we have found that this style of detonation box is somewhat RARE vs the more common plunger styled boxes that is seen in cartoons like the Coyote and the Road Runner. This detonator has 2 ignition switches on top of the control panel within the box (commonly powered by a magneto, car battery, etc.) to provide electrical power to the box. While our inspection team did not find any specific manufacture's marks, dates, etc. we did find a knob with the name Splitdorf Laboratory inscribed on it who was a major manufacturer of coils & magnetos back in the day and a terminal connector with the PAT. Date Nov. 26, 1907. After further research this coincides with the dates of similar detonator boxes that were powered by Ford Model T batteries, magnetos, etc. The dimensions of the power compartment also adds to the probability that this piece was powered the same way. Inspection notes mention that the wooden case is still in good sturdy condition with a dark wood grain patina. A crack was found in the bottom of the case, as well as a fine surface crack was also found running across the front of the box just below the lid latches. Neither crack will defer from the strength, integrity, nor the appearance of the case when displayed. The brass latches, hinge, and corner protectors are all accounted for and are in good condition. No mfg's. marks or previous owner's names were found. Detonator appears to be unrestored and is being offered in the same condition as we originally acquired this item. The original leather strap that was likely used to carry the detonator from place to place has been replaced with a heavy gauge metal multi-wire strap. Not pretty, but it will do the job. The case & lid is nicely constructed using hard wood, likely oak and what appears to be rabbet joints. Lastly the remnants of the original wiring appears to still be in place, but given the intended use of this item, we did not test this piece for functionality. See photos for more detail as to item's overall condition. Dimensions - Height 11" x Width 9 3/4" x Depth 6 1/2". To better demonstrate the original use of this very unique item, we photographed it with a 'Fake' Bundle of Prop Dynamite. Please note that this item was used for photography purposes only and it is not included with this lot. If you would have any questions regarding this item, please feel free to contact us.
