Description: This marvelous hand painted print is created in gorgeous white linen with red, black and blue ink and is a commemoration of the sinking of the US Battleship Maine with US flags, anchor and US Navy symbol. The top oval is of President William McKinley [25th President of the US], the left oval is Captain Gridley and the third oval is Admiral Dewey. Bunting surrounding President McKinley: "The Maine Well Remembered." Below the ovals: "Manila Captured August 13, 1898." The United States Navy battleship Maine mysteriously exploded and sank in the harbor of Havana, Cuba, in 1898. While the sinking of the Maine was not a direct cause of the Spanish American War, it did accelerate the breakdown in diplomatic relations between the United States and Spain. This beautiful print on linen is matted with a 4 inch wide rose red to match the colors. The walnut frame highlights the slogans and art work. Measurements for this fabulous creation are: Length from top to bottom=20 inches, Width side to side=20 inches, Depth from front to back=1 inch. This handsome maritime print on linen has been well cared for, gently displayed and is in excellent antique condition, free from damage or repairs. There is light puckering, since the linen was not tightly stretched due to its age. However, it does not impact the beauty of this exceptional print. It is the perfect addition to your Naval collection, particularly if you appreciate the historic reference!
