Born in Paris, Auguste Racinet, (1825-1893), an artist of considerable merit is highly acclaimed as one of the leading art historians of the period. This is an original 1873 print, not to be confused with the modern reprinted versions widely available. Very good condition as it has been protected in a portfolio for 120 years. This original plate from 'L'ornement polychrome' is a rare and much sought after book. Richly illustrated with these highly detailed plates, adapted from borders, tiles, carved wood panels, and other ornamental sources, the designs include classic Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Etruscan motifs; Chinese, Japanese, Persian and Indian patterns; samples from the Arabic and Byzantine cultures; Celtic, medieval, Renaissance and 18th century European art. The famous "Cliff" Hotel in San Francisco had these hanging on every floor and room of their Victorian Hotel. They are very beautiful and detailed.
