Description: I'm pleased to offer this attractive specimen of Rhodochrosite in Alabandite with Calcite and Quartz from the Humboldt mine, Portal, Cochise County, Arizona. The specimen measures 2.40 x 2.06 x .97 inches or 6.10 x 5.22 x 2.47cm. This is from the John Weber (1926-2015) collection of Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Weber's family donated his huge collection to the Pinal Geology and Mineral Museum and it is the backbone of our present museum display. The PGMM maintains a core reference Pinal County collection as well as a more diverse reference Arizona collection. I have been tasked to identify duplicate specimens, etc. that the museum can use to generate funds to operate the museum on a more consistent basis. To this end, this listing will directly benefit the PGMM and all proceeds from the sale of PGMM items go directly to the museum. Our curator and founder, Dr. Raymond Grant (raygrantite) actually collected this piece in March, 1995. A label from the late great David Shannon is included as is the catalog card from the Weber collection. The museum has two of these so I chose this piece to offer to the public. The Humboldt mine was worked primarily for silver from about 1905-1932 and also shipped a bit of copper, gold (trace) and manganese. The silver was largely present as silver mineralization associated with the alabandite. This piece show very light pink lenses of rhodochrosite that contrast beautifully with the stark black cleavages of alabandite. Under the UV light, fiery red-orange masses of calcite jump out along with a curious little wedge of bright yellow coloration. I looked at the list of minerals reported for the Humboldt mine on mindat.org and could not find a possible match. Hmmm. There is a fantastic online reference for the Humboldt mine--please search for "Humboldt mine Cochise County" and you'll find a lengthy string of documents and short papers dealing with the mine on the Arizona Geological Survey website. Thanks again for your purchase--this is quite good for an Arizona rhodo! Please check my feedback and my other eBay items. All specimens are carefully wrapped, come with complete and accurate labels and are quickly shipped. As always, your complete satisfaction is unconditionally guaranteed and I even offer FREE return shipping on any item that fails to satisfy for any reason---you can't go wrong. I'm reminded of the firm pledge printed on the old Foote Mineral Company mineral catalogs from more than a century ago, "Quality of specimens is assured as we permit return of specimens at our expense." Thanks for looking! I buy collections! Please contact me if you have a collection for sale or know of one that is available. I will pay a finder's fee to anyone that can point me to an eventual purchase!
