WHITEDLieutenant Colonel ROBERT W DEES NUMBER: 153 / 500 Certificate of Authenticity is included I collected the Paul Tibbets signature many years ago at the Mighty Eighth Museum in Savannah, GA. Paul Tibbets was an Eighth Air Force pioneer. Tibbets flew the lead bomber for the first American daylight heavy bomber mission on 17 August 1942, a raid against a marshalling yard in Rouen in Occupied France. On 9 October 1942, Tibbets led the first American raid of more than 100 bombers in Europe, attacking industrial targets in the French city of Lille. Only after his 8th AF experiences did he go on to B-29s and the atomic bomb program. The 34th Bomb Group’s B-17 Fortresses return to Mendelsham following a raid over Germany, April 1945. Copilot of “Queenie” briefs the crew chief while another B-17 taxies in. Above, the last plane home makes his final approach, streaming vapor from a badly overheating engine. The fickle English weather greets the returning airmen with a mixture of brilliant Spring sunshine and passing April showers. The drama of B-17s of the 34th Bomb Group returning from a raid in the final weeks of the war is skillfully portrayed against one of Robert Taylor’s dramatic English skies. In a painting packed with atmosphere and highly detailed content, this magnificent image not only brings to life the glorious Flying Fortresses of the USAAF, but also the lives of the brave young men who flew them, such as the two 34th Bomb Group skippers who signed each and every print.
