Today, the Nomura Collection, which includes 156 kosode and 100 screens on which are mounted fragments of these grand robes, is regarded by many as the most comprehensive and stunning collection of Japanese textiles ever compiled. Two exhibitions of portions of the Nomura Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art during the 1950s were largely responsible for developing public interest in Japanese textiles. Seventy-three kosode and kosode screens from the Nomura Collection form the base of the exhibition 'Robes of Elegance: Japanese Kimonos of the Sixteenth through Twentieth Centuries' at the North Carolina Museum of Art. These magnificent examples of a unique Japanese art form, now in the collection of the National Museum of Japanese History in Sakura, are joined by seventeen twentieth-century kimonos from the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, which demonstrate how contemporary artists are continuing to experiment with weaving and dyeing techniques. All ninety robes are illustrated in full color and thoroughly discussed in this catalogue, which accompanies the exhibition. Also included in the catalogue are essays by Japanese scholars outlining the history of the kosode and its gradual development into today's kimono. Discussions of the materials and techniques used to achieve a wide range of effects in the making and decoration of kimonos provide the reader with a substantial foundation from which to study the robes and screens.
