For the 100th birthday of Philip Rosenthal (1916– 2001), designer Sebastian Herkner has created the minimalist design pieces RORO, based on the most striking part of a pig – the snout. The inspiration for the pieces was Rosenthal’s pet pig RORO, for whom in 1967 Philip Rosenthal wanted to build a sty in Bauhaus style. The pig sty was designed by none other than architect Walter Gropius after he lost a bet. RORO was and still is a lucky pig. "Roro" piggy bank by Sebastian Herkner at Rosenthal Oh, how cute! For the company's 100th birthday, designer Sebastian Herkner designed "Roro" decorative and piggy banks for Rosenthal.Socket nose, curly tail and compact build - everyone recognizes the pig in Sebastian Herkner's design. For Rosenthal's anniversary, he had the company mascot "Roro" resurrected - once the porcelain manufacturer's domestic pig, for which architect Walter Gropius had to design a shelter after a losing bet. Today's "Roro" is of course made of porcelain and is far less demanding when it comes to sleeping. The Beijing Design Week event tells visitors a story involving Philip Rosenthal Jr.’s own pet pig, traditional dinnerware, and Bauhaus. Called “The Bauhaus Pigsty” and put on in collaboration with Chinese curation teams MY STUDIO and So Far So Good Studio, the exhibition showcases products that commemorate a bet Philip Rosenthal Jr. won in 1967 with Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius. Gropius was challenged to design a home for Rosenthal’s pig Roro, and these design elements reappeared in London-based designer Ewelina Wisniowska’s ceramic TAC series tableware and German product designer Sebastian Herkner’s minimalist porcelain piggy banks. How sweet! one would like to call out. So round the body, so clearly the nose, so tiny the curled tail. A few details are enough for the designer Sebastian Herkner to turn a simple thing into a minimalist pig. Available in three sizes, RORO is pleasant to the touch, a practical money box or just a beautiful decorative object. And not only that: RORO almost made architectural history. Once a domestic pig in the Rosenthal am Rothbühl plant, the architect Walter Gropius designed a stable for the cute creature because of a lost bet. It wasn't built after all, Sebastian Herkner (* 1981) is the shooting star of the German design scene - with award-winning designs that combine traditional craftsmanship with new techniques. After studying product design at the HfG Offenbach, he started his own business in 2006 and designed furniture, lights and accessories for manufacturers such as Classicon, Moroso, Gubi and Pulpo. Sebastian Herkner is also active as an interior and exhibition designer and art director of the Czech label Verreum. For Rosenthal he designed the Collana, Falda and Domo vase series, the Mitis watch collection and the Meta wall hooks. He lives and works in Offenbach.IN LUCK,BECAUSE YOU CAN ONLY SAY![Palazzo RORO] Because Walter Gropius lost a bet with Philip Rosenthal, he has to build a barn for the cute domestic pig RORO. The architect gets to work and makes a drawing. With a Bauhaus-style stable and an adjacent meadow where RORO grazes happily. Exactly this drawing is the template for the new decor Palazzo RORO. Designed by Ewelina Wisniowska, it wafts over the porcelain surface of TAC, the iconic shape of the Bauhaus founder. The designer plays with the gold rim by skillfully alienating it. The very graphic-looking decor runs gently downwards and, in its polygonal structure, is reminiscent of bales of straw and chain-link fences. The pig is not far from the drawing either: Sometimes it is having fun in the middle of the plate, then it happily adorns the inside of a bowl. On the architecturally strict TAC form, the plump pig RORO conjures up a smile on your face.
