Each CD Jewel Case holds a descriptive booklet (English, German, French, Italian) about the recorded works, composer and the conductor or the Libretto. An excerpt: “Aida is the work with which the 19-year-old Arturo Toscanini, fresh out of the conservatory, made his unanticipated debut as a conductor on June 30, 1886 in Rio de Janeiro. The opera was not quite 15 years old at the time – its world premiere had taken place in Cairo in December 1871… “After Cairo and Milan, Parma – Toscanini’s native town, was the location of the next Aida, in April 1872, there is a possibility that Arturo, age 5, was present at the event… music-loving relatives had begun taking him to performances…when he was 4… “Otello would be given its premiere at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala (1886) with Toscanini playing second cello in the orchestra…” Thus, the works of Verdi, like those of Brahms, were for Toscanini music of a contemporary voice. He was renowned for his intensity, perfectionism, and his ear for orchestral detail and sonority. Toscanini was the music director of La Scala in Milan and the New York Philharmonic. Later in his career, he was appointed the first music director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra (1937–1954).
