Blank verso. VG with light mailing fold in the center. Nathan Haskell Dole was born in Massachusetts and raised in Maine. After graduating from Harvard, he had a brief teaching career before gaining prominence as a writer and journalist in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. He was a well-known translator, most notably of Tolstoy and other Russian authors. His translations included the first American edition of Anna Karenina and a variorum edition of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. His many literary acquaintances and friends included Emerson, Longfellow, Lowell, and Whitman.
