Entirely in Dole's hand and signed by at the bottom. Undated, but the poem was first published in 1895 in The Hawthorn Tree and Other Poems (NY: Thomas Y. Crowell.) 9 x 6 inches on cream paper. Blank verso. VG with light mailing fold in the center. Nathan Haskell Dole was born in Massachusetts and raised in Maine. After graduating from Harvard, he had a brief teaching career before gaining prominence as a writer and journalist in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. He was a well-known translator, most notably of Tolstoy and other Russian authors. His translations included the first American edition of Anna Karenina and a variorum edition of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. His many literary acquaintances and friends included Emerson, Longfellow, Lowell, and Whitman.
