The famed "golden oak" of Stinking Water Creek in NE Oregon is some of the most prized petrified wood found on the planet. Pieces this large are almost never seen and the opportunity to craft a world class mantle piece from this large partial cross section was a true pleasure for this passionate lapidary! My favorite piece in the last year of production in the Sticks in Stones rockshop is without a doubt this glorious set of petrified "golden oak" bookends from Oregon's most famous petrified wood deposit - Stinking Water Creek! This unbelievable set of bookends shows why this wood is so popular among collectors, jewelers and decorators - it's the finest gem grade petrified oak there is and this set is among the best of the breed I've seen!! You could collect for a lifetime and not have another opportunity at something like these amazing bookends as this wood is increasingly difficult and rare to come by. Each half is nearly a foot tall and over 9" wide which means they would make the most dramatic statement on a mantle or library wall. A true testament to the quality of stones we produce in our rockshop! This is a truly wonderful, gem grade set of bookends cut from petrified wood. The fossil wood used in this set comes from Oregon's famed Stinking Water Creek. This is the legendary "golden oak" that collectors have relentlessly sought for several decades as the king of all petrified woods. This particular piece of petrified oak surpasses many Stinking Water specimens because the exterior rind actually still shows the contours of the oak bark, which is something very few of these specimens show. This particular piece of fossil oak is very well preserved and easily identified as white oak with a 10 power lens. The agate face reveals both the growth rings and the medullary rays in the richest natural wood tones you've ever seen in stone! It's incredibly well agatized, crafted like only Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary can, and will make a fantastic natural treasure to add to the high bidder's home or office! We select only the showiest pieces of petrified wood to cut into bookends. These pieces are carefully cut in our shop so that you end up with a perfectly matched pair, one agate piece is the mirror image of the other. Of course, there are plenty of differences in the two halves, but the photo should let you appreciate how well we do this. The bookends sit perfectly upright and are square to one another. They are felted on both the sides and bottom to protect the books and the shelf. We make sure they are 100%25 functional on top of being beautiful! Of course, these agates proudly show the perfect polish that the Sticks-in-Stones rockshop has dedicated itself to. The finish looks poured on - but there's nothing there except rock!! Each half measures about 11 1/2" tall & 9 1/2" wide at the widest spot on the polished face. They're cut 2 1/8" thick which makes them plenty stable for a desktop as well. Weight for this set is about 27.42 lbs. which makes these bookends suitable for law books, novels, cookbooks, encyclopedias or textbooks.
