Description: "Surrender Proceedings April 9, 1865 Appomattox Court House" by Frank Cauble A STILLNESS AT APPOMATTOX" by Bruce Catton published by International Collectors Library 1953 first edition. This book is a great primary source on the Civil War. If you are interested in this war, then this book is a must read. A very interesting book. Highly recommended. Appears unread. Detailed indexed and long list of references. Selling for over $70.00 on other sites in this condition. The Appomattox Court House marks the beginning of the country's transition to peace and reunification following four years of Civil War. It also marks the beginning of Federal occupation of the South and the so called Reconstruction Era. This is the site of General Robert E. Lee's surrender to Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant in April, 1865. Lee decided to surrender his army in part because he wanted to prevent the unnecessary complete destruction to the South. The burning of Atlanta, many small towns, churches, private homes (including many who had remained loyal to the Union as well as those of free Blacks) led him to believe surrender was the only way to save anything left of the South. On April 9, 1865, the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House, Virginia signaled the end of the nation's largest war with the highest deaths of any of America's wars.A War Between the States history whose story is seldom honestly told today. I had two ancestors who fought for the North and their brother who fought for the South. Many families were divided. The reason most Americans fought was not slavery but was other economic concerns, defense of home, defending the Constitution, being drafted and many other reasons. No war has just one cause that is a fact all serious historians will agree. A University of Maryland study in the late 1960's said it had taken 100 years for the South to fully recover from the War. Based on the desecration of graves and monuments renaming highways and schools, the purging of Southern history books and more has led many to feel that the healing process is still far from finished. 438 pages with a detailed index. Measures about 5.8" x 8.3". Highly recommended.
