SUSAN HAYWARD - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 09/28/1966 - HFSID 279721 SUSAN HAYWARD Academy Award-winning actress Susan Hayward signed this typed letter on the stationery of her second husband Floyd Eaton Chalkley to ask questions about taxes that she owed the city of Duluth in 1966. She signed this letter less than a year after the death of Chalkley. Accompanied by original tax notice and mailing envelope and a 7x9 b/w publicity photo of a bare-shouldered Hayward behind a stand of daisies. Typed letter signed "Susan Hayward". 1 page, 7x10½, on stationery of Floyd Eaton Chalkey, her second husband. Sept. 28, 1966. In full: "Dear Cal: Re: the enclosed. I received a notice from these cookies that I owed them money and requested further information on who what why when where - they sent back the enclosed. I never heard Eaton mention this but I presume it may have something to do with an automobile repossession or those mortgages we all bought up years ago. If you have anything in your files on this I wish you'd let me know - so that they don't Fi-Fa me -because if they did that I'd just have to lower the boom and Fo-Fumm them. Sara was down for a few days and we had a nice visit - she asked to be remember to you and Louise. Much love,". Postscripted: "What is a Fi-Fa?" Lightly soiled and creased. Pen skipped slightly while writing signature, which is still legible. Paper clip impression in top left corner. Folded once vertically and twice horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by three items: 1) Document signed by the City Clerk of Duluth. According to this document, Hayward's taxes through 1965 "Must be paid by/Oct 1, Otherwise/Fi Fa will be/issued". She owed a total of $67.68. Lightly toned and creased. Paper clip impressions and blue ink doodles from unknown hand at top edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. 2) Original mailing envelope from stationery of F. Eaton Chalkey. Postmarked Fort Lauderdale, Dec. 21, 1966. Addressed to Mr. A. B. Parker, Holderness Building, Carrollton, Georgia. With pencil notations in unknown hand: "Susan Hayward/Very Funny". With two American stamps affixed. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. 3) Unsigned photograph of Hayward, b/w, 7x9. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Pencil notations on verso with impressions on image (not visible head-on). Adhesive residue on verso (no show-through). "Eaton" was Hayward's second husband FLOYD EATON CHALKEY, to whom she was married from Feb. 8, 1957 until his death on Jan. 9, 1966. This letter was written eight months after his death. SUSAN HAYWARD (1918-1975, born Edythe Marrener in Brooklyn, New York City) made her first trip to Hollywood to audition for the part of Scarlet O'Hara in Gone with the Wind.
