Description: The House of Niccolò is a series of historical novels by Dorothy Dunnett set in the mid-fifteenth-century European Renaissance. The protagonist in these books is Nicholas de Fluery (Niccolò), a boy of uncertain birth who rises to the heights of European merchant banking and international political intrigue. Much of the content is based on true locations and customs of the time, but is fictional in story detail, but beautifully written putting one in the time and place of the 15th century! The House of Niccolò series extends geographically to important urban centers of Bruges, Venice, Florence, Geneva, and the Hanseatic League; Burgundy, Flanders, and Poland; Iceland; the Iberian Peninsula and Madeira; the Black Sea cities of Trebizond and Caffa; Persia; the Mediterranean islands of Cyprus and Rhodes; Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula; West Africa and the city of Timbuktu, and other regions of Europe and the middle east. Dorothy Dunnett started writing in the late 1950s. Her first novel, The Game of Kings, was published in the United States in 1961, and in the United Kingdom the year after. She published 22 books in total, including the six-part Lymond Chronicles and the eight-part Niccolo Series, and co-authored another volume with her husband. Also an accomplished professional portrait painter, Dunnett exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy on many occasions and had portraits commissioned by a number of prominent public figures in Scotland.
