The Paper Girl by Jessica M. Brophy (English) Paperback Book

Description: The Paper Girl by Jessica M. Brophy The Paper Girl is a poetry chapbook that details the coming of age story of a daughter growing up in a Baptist fundamentalist home in New Jersey. The girl is a working class paper girl who is sometimes invited into the private world of her privileged neighbors lives where she tries to make sense of what family means. She is good at observing, processing, and reflecting upon the loneliness, kindness, and freedom of others around her. But to her own horror, she also internalizes their impressions about the port wine stain birthmark on her face, and dizzy from the orthodoxy of her mothers rules and religion, she struggles to find a language to narrate her own story. FORMAT Paperback LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Author Biography Jessica Margaret Brophy is a New Jersey native and a poet who writes about family quirks, natures luster, childhood foods, the body, and spiritual identity. She is also a scholar of the sublime, addressing issues within womens studies and the black aesthetic of African American female poets. She has published scholarship on the poetry of Sharon Olds, Jean Toomer, Paulette Childress White, and Rita Dove. She teaches as a freelance academic at both Lynchburg College and the local community college. Among other journals, her poetry has appeared in Natural Bridge: A Journal of Contemporary Poetry, Alimentum: The Literature of Food, and Awakenings Review and is forthcoming in a special poetry anthology of Blue Lyra Review, Parts of the Whole: Poetry of the Body. Only until she began writing about the port wine stain birthmark on her face (about three years ago) was she able to find a language to write about anything else. She knew her first collection of poetry would have to be about who she was before finding this language-the observing, questioning, reflecting child. Brophy is currently the creative writing editor at The First Unitarian Church of Lynchburg, Virginia, organizer of a monthly series called "Poetry Talk" at Africa House, and has recently begun offering writing consultation services to young professional women at Review Jessica Brophys The Paper Girl is hidden in plain sight. These poems about growing up are shy, yet direct; raucous, yet deceptive. In this provocative collection, Brophy examines delivery, fragility, the markings of gender, the origami of living, the longing for self-discovery-what it means to be a paper girl. This slender collection leaves us wanting more from the narrator who is both wise and lost like a heroine from a fairytale. Monifa Love Asante, author of poetry collections Dreaming Underground and Provisions and Freedom in the Dismal, an award-winning novel Marked by frank scrutiny and keen intuition, these poems conjure up a unique vision of a childhood. From "dirty miracles" and "craving for a wild substance" to the careless cruelty of adults, Jessica Brophy reveals deep aches, comforts, and questions through a girl-turning-womans eyes. Discoveries such as the "choreography" of sex and "why God/lost his touch" become freshly mysterious in these perceptive poems. Here, daughters "have no choice but to discover details out of their own fiery imaginations." These poems, by turns bold and delicate, gift us with Jessica Brophys own fiery imagination. The Paper Girl is a marvelous debut. Laura Long, author of The Eye of Caroline Herschel and Out of Peel Tree By twining an adolescent girls outside world-the foyers of the families on her newspaper route-with the inside world of her own working-class home and family-eight siblings, a parents failing marriage, and religion-turned-fundamentalist-Jessica Brophys The Paper Girl delivers a collection of searing yet heartfelt poems that are as much memoir and cultural critique as they are poetry. The "eye" of these poems deflects from the "I" as we come to know the speaker through her quiet observations of other peoples lives. Her sociologists sense of truth in the details quickens our understanding of her place in the world-a rich home smells like "some mix of wild cherry bing, imitation vanilla, and lemon Pledge" while "chicken roll is a delicacy for kids on peanut butter and pasta diets." Brophy crafts language the way a photographer employs light: she gives voice to the shadows and, with deft and subtle turns of her lens, coaxes the oft-hidden stories of human experience to life.
