Description: NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI THE PRINCE THE TRANSLATION FROM THE ITALIAN BY HILL THOMPSON, WITH A NEW PREFACE BY IRWIN EDMAN, The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written. COLLECTOR'S EDITION, Bound in Genuine Leather, the Easton Press, NORWALK, CONNETICUT. NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI (1469-1527). The Prince was completed in 1513 in Italy, and republished many times in the original Italian. An important editiion of Machiavelli's works in eight volumes was issued in Italy in 1813, with a new edition in 1833. The chief twentieth-century editions are those edited by Mazzoni and Casella (Florence, 1929) and by Feltrinelli (Milan, 1960). The first English translation of The Prince was made in 1640 by Edward Dacres, followed by others in 1675, 1762, and 1882. Lawrence Arthur Burd's critical edition was published by Oxford in 1891. Luigi Ricci's widely printed version first came out in 1903, and translation appeared in 1913. The first edition to contain the Thompson version accompanied by the introduction by Irwin Edman was published in New York in 1954 (copyright ©1954 by the George Macy Companies, Inc.) This Collecor's Edition is published by advance reservation exclusively for subscribers to the Easton Press collection of The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written. The frontispiece portrait was specially commissioned and, like the other special contents, is copyright ©1980 by The Easton Press. Printed in the United States of America. The author of The Prince was one of the greatest prose writers of the Italian Renaissance. Born to a moderately prosperous family of Florence in 1469, Niccolo Machiavelli seems to have read widely in the Latin and Italian classics. In 1494 he was appointed a town clerk, and four years later became chancellor of the Republic of Florence-a position he held until 1512. (185 pages) This is a masterful piece of literature to read for anyone, male or female, who are interested in national or international political science. The words of Niccolo Machiavelli (1459-1527) are still relevent in today's present time as well as many centuries to come. This is an excellent collectible to own and read at leisure from time to time.
