Description: Very Good+. A first edition copy of this fascinating collection of historical studies by the English historian Martin Andrew Sharp Hume. Collated, complete with five illustrated portrait plates. In a wonderful three-quarter crimson morocco leather fine binding in superb condition, with just a spot of wear to the crown of spine and slight marks to upper compartment. Marbled paper to covers and very handsome marbled endpapers. Spine features beautiful gilt floral decorations, compartments, and raised bands. Top edge gilt. A very nicely bound book. Nicely large 8vo- over 7¾" - 9¾". With the bookplate of William H. Bartlett, whose commodity trading firm, Bartlett, Frazier & Co., Chicago, IL, did well in grain. His bookplate depicts the grand fireplace of the chief residence, Casa Grande, at his ranch on that property, Vermejo Park, in New Mexico. That house was built after Bartlett purchased 205,000 acres of Maxwelll Land Grant property, in 1902, including Vermejo Park. His library purportedly contained 10,000 volumes, which were bought and possibly bound by his architect (and Frank Lloyd Wright's mentor) Joseph Silsbee. An interesting provenance.
