This rare succulent, Dioscorea elephantipes, also known as Elephant's Foot and Turtle Plant, is a unique addition to any plant collection. The plant belongs to the Cacti & Succulents family, and its Genus is Dioscorea. The Common Name of the plant is Elephant's Foot, or Turtle Plant. This plant is perfect for those who want to add a touch of exotic beauty to their garden or home. It is easy to care for and will thrive in the right conditions. This rare succulent is a great investment for any plant lover and makes a great gift for anyone who loves growing rare and unusual houseplants. The plants being sold here have been grown from seed and are approximately 3 years old. These plants have not been collected from the wild. The plants pictured with this sale are representative of what you will receive. The plant grows in partial sun to bright shade and will thrive in the outdoors year round in Zones 9-11. In other zones it will grow outdoors during the warmer months of the year but should be protected from frost and freezing temperatures. It can also be grown indoors in a bright window all year long. Dioscorea elephantipes is a caudiciform, or "fat bottom plant," and should be grown as a succulent in loose, easy draining soil. It should be watered during its growing season only whenever the soil is dry. We soak the soil when we water, then allow the medium to dry out completely before watering again. As with most succulents this plant will rot if it is kept in wet conditions for too long. It is best to keep it on the drier side. Dioscorea elephantipes has a summer dormancy period when temperatures get really warm. The vining growth on the plant will die back to its base at this time and the plant will lose its roots. During this period the plant is still alive and is surviving off of the moisture and nutrition it has stored up inside its base. After its brief dormancy period, the plant will eventually begin active growth again by producing a vine from the center of its base. Older mature plants can reach 10 feet or more in height. It is best to give the plant a trellis or some type of support to support this active green growth. The plants being sold here are currently dormant and have no active growth or roots. You can place it in a pot of loose, dry medium for now, but wait until you begin to see its new growth before watering. Once new growth begins, you can water as described above. Fertilize the plant with a succulent or cacti fertilizer on a monthly basis during the growing season. New growth will flower in late fall or early winter with lovely yellowish green flowers. Mature plants can eventually get quite large, about 2 to 2.5 feet in diameter and over 30 pounds in weight. This won't happen for a few years, so don't panic right away. Plants are shipped within the continental USA via USPS Priority Mail for $10. Each additional plant you purchase will add $2 to the shipping fee.
