Description: USS Sculpin SS-191 offered is a memorial Sargo Class diesel submarine cover postmarked at Portsmouth, NH on March 31, 1982. Blue actual photo of this submarine printed on cachet #2834 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. Cover franked with a 20 cent flag stamp. Cover with DIY matte and 5x7 frame, makes a fine gift! USS Sculpin: this fine 310 foot vessel was commissioned 16 Jan 1939 and ordered to the the Pacific Theater. Enemy ships damaged her near the Truk Lagoon on Nov 19, 1944 and she was grounded. Several crewmen, including the skipper were lost, they joined many other "Greatest Generation" submariners on Eternal Patrol. 42 crewmen were picked up by an enemy ship and most were lost when the enemy carrier, they were on, was sunk by an US submarine on Dec 4, 1944.
