Description: Named after an insulting label placed on William Shakespeare by a competing playwright, Upstart Crow was a café, bookseller and gift shop that Lila Abed opened in 1981. The San Diego location of Upstart Crow Bookstore was the only one of nine outposts of the Berkeley-based chain to survive the company's abrupt 1987 bankruptcy. which forced a second San Diego branch within University Towne Center to shutter. Its closure in 2016 was at least partly motivated by the incoming redevelopement of Seaport Village by The Port of San Diego in combination with increased rent and decreased sales. This vintage bookmark measures 6 by 2 inches. It's an early (possibly original) bookmark from Upstart Crow's San Francisco location. It has a quote about Shakespeare (referring to him as an Upstart Crow) by the American author, Robert Greene, on the back. This bookmark has creasing along the top and bottom edge.
