First published in 1719, Isaac Watts' book 'The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament' was a groundbreaking work. Until its publication, Christian congregations largely sung metrical psalms, or the Psalms of David translated in such a way as to follow English rhyme and hymnic meter. Instead of adhering to as much of the original wording as possible, Watts paraphrased the psalms through the language of Christianity. Although there are many editions of Watts' book, this particular edition was printed and also quite possibly bound by the 19th century American printer Herman Mann. Mann was a prolific printer, binder, papermaker, paper marbler, bookseller, and newspaper publisher, and was responsible for this "corrected" edition of Watts' work.
