This cross stitch pattern was adapted and inspired by an original Navajo American rug and sand paintings. Yei (pronounced "yay") is the Navajo name for the benevolent supernatural beings who bring their healing power to medicinal ceremonies still performed today. They were first portrayed in sand painting designs created for these healing ceremonies, but the modern Yei rug is more of a pictorial composition, showing a row of front facing stylized stick figures. Between the Yeis, cornstalks, feathers and arrows may appear a Rainbow Guardian which often surrounds and protects the figures on three sides, indicating the sand painting roots or this particular design. "Yei-be-chai" is the name of the masked human dancers participating in the actual healing ceremony and impersonating the Yei. The Yei-be-chai rug usually shows a line of dancers in a row and with one foot raised as though synchronized in dancing motion. The patient for whom the ceremony is being held may also be depicted in this procession. The Medicine Man and the "Talking God" often lead the way and a Clown figure if present is shown at the end of the line. The rug incorporates traditional design elements associated with the Navajo reservation in New Mexico. This pattern, adapted to use as cross stitch, can be used as a whole design or components of its design elements. It can be used to create wall hangings, pillows, runners and even rugs. The pattern is 154 x 244 stitches, using 14 count Sand Aida Cloth the design size is 11 x 17.5 inches. But you must add at least 3 inches around design size when purchasing cloth.
