The 250 designation represents each engine cylinder's displacement in cubic centimeters, while the GTO designation - 'Gran Turismo Omologato' - is Italian for Grand Touring Homologated. The cars were built to compete in the FIA's Group 3 Grand Touring racing category. The FIA rules at the time stipulated that one hundred cars must be manufactured during twelve consecutive months for homologation into the GT racing category.
